Rules

Short version: latex paint, keep it kind, take your drop cloth home.

  1. You must be a current-year PTA member to reserve the rock. Membership is $12 and takes about a minute.
  2. Reservations are $10 per date and open twice a year — mid-July for the first semester, early December for the second.
  3. Two dates per family per semester so everyone gets a turn.
  4. Paint the evening before your date or early that morning, before 7:15am. The rock is yours for the whole school day.
  5. Latex or acrylic paint only. No spray paint, no glitter, no adhesive vinyl, nothing that blows into the car line.
  6. Keep it kind and keep it school-appropriate: birthdays, congratulations, welcomes, thank-yous. No business promotion, no politics, no campaigning.
  7. Bring your own supplies and take everything home with you, including the drop cloth.
  8. The rock lives on school property. Administration may repaint anything that breaks these rules, and we will refund you if that happens.
  9. Rain does not get a refund, but we will happily move you to the next open date.

Questions

Things people ask

What if it rains on my day?

Paint dries, rain happens. If the weather genuinely ruins it, email the Spirit Rock chair and we will move you to the next open date at no charge. We do not issue cash refunds for weather.

Can I reserve a weekend?

The calendar only offers school days, because the point is for your student to see it on the way in. If you want a Saturday for a special occasion, ask — we can sometimes make it work.

How big is the rock?

About four feet across and three feet tall. A quart of paint covers it with room to spare. Two people can do it comfortably in 45 minutes.

Do I have to prime over the last person's painting?

Yes, and it is easier than it sounds. A base coat of white or your background color goes on fast with a roller.

Can our business sponsor the rock?

Not on a booked date — the rock is for families. Business partners get plenty of other placement, listed on the partners page.

Where does the $10 go?

Straight into the general PTA fund, which is to say classroom grants, field trips and the STEM lab. The rock itself was bought outright in 2018, so there is no cost to recoup.
