You do not have to be a PTA member to volunteer, and you do not have to volunteer to be a PTA member. Pick a size that fits your life. Nobody is keeping score.
Twenty minutes
Sign up for one item on a teacher-lunch list. Drop it at the front office before 10:40am.
Laminating, cutting, stuffing folders. We send the materials home in your student's bag and you send them back.
Reshare the Fun Run or Spring Festival post to your neighborhood group. Genuinely moves the number.
One shift
Run a ring toss, a cake walk or the dunk tank for one hour. The single easiest way to be useful.
Stand at the track with a clicker and cheer. Grade-level shifts run 8:30am to 2:30pm.
Haul the screen, run the popcorn machine, pick up afterwards. Teardown crew gets first pick of leftover pizza.
Ring up students during the fair week. Training is about four minutes.
All year
The bridge between one teacher and 22 families. Coordinate class parties, teacher gifts and the sign-up chasing.
Shelve, scan and reshelve one morning a week. The librarian will name a reading nook after you.
Own an event end to end with a budget, a predecessor's handover notes and a board member on call.
Elected in April for the following year. Come to a board meeting first and see what you are signing up for.
Do this first
The background check
Cherokee County requires a background check for anyone volunteering during the school day or on a field trip. It is free, takes about ten minutes online, and lasts three years.
Do it now rather than the week of the event. Approval takes about 10 days, and every year a handful of parents miss the Spring Festival because they started too late.
When you need one
- Anything during the school day
- Any field trip, as a chaperone or a driver
- Anywhere you would be alone with students
When you do not
Evening and weekend events where families are present, anything you do from home, and dropping something at the front office.

Every one of these is currently unfilled, which means it is either not happening or the board is quietly absorbing it.
Not sure where you would fit?
Tell the volunteer chair what your week actually looks like and she will find something that fits it. Saying "I have almost no time" is a completely normal way to start that conversation.
